Doreen Fletcher - E7

For thirty years Doreen Fletcher painted the streets of London until, discouraged by lack of interest from the art establishment, she stopped painting in 2004, recommencing in 2013 when she left her full-time post in education.

Doreen Fletcher’s atmospheric urban landscapes have only recently captured the attention of a wide audience, when the re-discovery of her paintings by the well known East End blogger, the Gentle Author, revealed a distinctive vision of the changing capital.  For the first time, the Nunnery Gallery has brought an extensive group of her works back under one roof, in the home of their making – the East End.

The works reveal the drastic changes of east London’s streets across just three decades, remembering the businesses long forgotten and the buildings that have since been knocked down.  A superb colorist, Fletcher applies her rigorous technique to recording the drama of the city in compelling and authoritative images – stating “I am an artist interested in the pockets ofI grew up in Newcastle-under-Lyme, a small town in the Midlands. From an early age I wanted to be an artist. The only child in a working class family I was lucky enough to receive excellent tuition in painting and drawing from a Royal Academician. Even as a teenager I focused on my immediate urban environment for subject matter.

I came to London at the age of twenty and the city has been my home ever since. For a few years I lived in South West London, then spent seven years in Paddington West London , moving to the East End in 1983 as because, at that time accommodation was cheap; factories were closing and many local inhabitants were moving out to Essex, leaving a lot of empty run-down houses and warehouse space that no one wanted except of course the artists! In 2007 I moved to Forest Gate because I felt the need for access to open country, yet proximity to the heart of London. I have been lucky enough to find both.

My concern as an artist is with the pockets of life that we ignore every day whether I am painting London or the wild, mountainous area of the Cevennes in Southern France where I also spent part of the year. My paintings are reflections on how much still remains from the past along with forming an appreciation of how those who have stayed and still inhabit it have adapted to the rapidly changing environment. This is as true of a hamlet in the Cevennes as it is of the Woodgrange Road. Presenting their ordinariness in a particular way I envisage my subjects to be not only reminders of the past, but also as active survivors struggling positively to find a place in a world that is changing beyond recognition."
